Thermoformable integral composite material and process for its production

Abstract

A one-part composite material is produced without the use of adhesives. In this case, fibres of a layer of unwoven fibres are needle-punched into a thermoformable foam element, to be precise preferably into a thermoformable semi-stiff or semi-rigid foam element having foam cells which are expandable under heat. A binder resin is applied to the layer of unwoven fibres and dried in an oven. When this preferred composite material is subsequently formed into a moulding by a thermoforming process, the foam cells expand with the fibres securely enclosed in the foam element.
